Born in New York in 1950, Saniel Bonder was given an Honorary National Scholarship upon entering Harvard -- and promptly had it taken away due to his participation in an anti-Viet Nam War demonstration, an action and consequence he has never regretted. However, his political activism soon gave way to a religious and spiritual quest, based on the sobering recognition that came to him that each one of us, on every side of every issue, is living as if in a cage of mirrors turned in upon ourselves, chronically self-absorbed. He saw, and still sees, that until great numbers of people awaken stably beyond the confines of ordinary limited self-awareness and its concerns, all the changes we can make politically and socially will be fundamentally cosmetic. (He did graduate from Harvard with a B.A. in Social Relations.)

His quest involved both Western and Eastern journeys and consumed his entire early adulthood. His primary Western teachers were Martin Buber of "I and Thou" fame, and the Beat poets. His primary Eastern and Eastern-based spiritual teachers were two great exponents of the Heart, the Indian sage Ramana Maharshi and the American-born avatar-master Adi Da Samraj. However, it was only after his leaving Adi Da's work in 1992 that Saniel's own awakening process rapidly fulfilled itself--in the mysterious activating presence of the Divine Shakti, the Goddess. He then resolved to "democratize" the blessed awakening that had come to him seemingly when grace was least available, after leaving his guru of almost 20 years.

Ever since then, late 1992, Saniel has been one of the founding pioneers of the movement toward embodiment of awakened awareness and the full integration of spiritual and everyday life. He is the founder of the international Waking Down in Mutuality movement. It now has nearly three dozen active teachers and has helped many hundreds of everyday people of all ages fundamentally replicate, each in his or her own way, the deeply embodied and relational Self-realization that Saniel enjoys. He has published more than a dozen books on this new kind of awakening and deep transformation, including Waking Down: Beyond Hypermasculine Dharmas, The White-Hot Yoga of the Heart, Healing the Spirit/Matter Split, and Great Relief: Nine Sacred Secrets Your Body Wants You to Know. More recently, he has brought out an acclaimed new hi-tech fantasy novel, Ultimaya 1.0: The Trouble with the Wishes of Leopold Stokes.

Saniel and his wife and full teaching partner Linda Groves-Bonder continue to serve and help develop the Waking Down movement. They are also founders of Human Sun Institute, with the mission "to ease the stress, increase the joy, and brighten the lives of everyday people today, and to awaken, educate and empower leaders for tomorrow." They are both founding members of Ken Wilber's Integral Institute and teach around the U.S. They live outside Sonoma, California.

He writes, "I've never given up my dream of being part of something that changes the world, changes human society for the better at its very heart and core. That's what Linda and I, our colleagues, and our growing international community are all about."
